Is getting your license really worth it?

In my own opinion, you should get your license as soon as possible. I got mine a month late, and I’m already wishing that I’d gotten it on time. It makes it really easy to get around, yet the added wait of a month to be able to drive friends is burdening. Especially because I’m the only one of my friends who is a licensed driver.

They all want me to be able to drive them places. Some of them are 17 and soon to be 18 but neglected to get their licenses on time.

My closest friend will be 18 in the summer yet has not gotten his permit. I think he would have benefited from acting sooner, although some folks just don’t have the motivation or willpower to get their licenses on time.

I, for one, was not expecting the freedom that one receives with a license, so I took Driver’s Ed on time but did not book my lessons for months. That bogged me down, because it pushed my test date a month farther, and therefore pushed my final license date a month farther. I’ll be through with the six month rule in several weeks.

This article should serve as a caution to younger students, because you WILL want to have your license as soon as you possibly can.

However, there is a point where the lethargy cannot be counteracted. If you’ve reached 17 and a half and haven’t taken Driver’s Ed or gotten your permit, you may as well just wait until you’re 18 and go get your license then. The reason for this is because you have to wait six months to be able to drive yourself, at which point you’ll be 18 anyways. Another reason is because you’ll have to wait another six months to drive friends: totaling your time to one year without being able to drive anyone.

The moral of this story is to get your license as soon as you can. Enjoy your new-found freedom!
