You approach the door of the Pentucket theater room, bristling with nervous energy. Raising your hand slowly to knock on the door, you cringe, doubtful whether you will receive an answer from whatever lies beyond the door. However, you do.

The door opens slightly to reveal the heads of one leather-jacket-wearing, hair-slicked-back boy and a ponytail-sporting, poodle-skirt-rocking girl.

“What’s the word?” the girl asks you, enunciating each syllable carefully.

“…Grease…?” you reply timidly, hopefully arching one eyebrow, only to be dragged in by the front of your sweatshirt into the glory that is the Pentucket theatre room when it has been transported back to the 50’s.

This is Grease. The Musical. Coming soon to a high school near you.

Okay, that may have been a tad melodramatic, but the core facts are true: the Pentucket High School’s theatre department will be performing Grease next weekend. However, its probably not true that they’re hiding a portal into the 50’s in the theatre room. Unless they’re keeping it all to themselves…but that’s another article for another time.

Grease is “the classic story that you fell in love with when you were a kid, but it’s your classmates performing it, so it’s double the fun,” summarized Pentucket junior Rachel Smith who is playing Rizzo.

Fellow junior Kevin Lundy, who is playing Kenickie, also mentioned that the dancing is “a lot more intense,” and that “people are going to be blown away by [the number] ‘Born to Hand Jive.’”

As always, there was some drama when the cast list was first announced but sophomore Lindsey Karalias thinks that “it was a good decision, [based on] where the cast is now.”

Lundy agreed, saying he believes that “everyone has done the best of their abilities. They’ve grown into their roles,” and have developed each character beyond what was stated in the script.

In some instances, the actors have taken characters that were already obnoxious and made them even more so. Smith wholeheartedly states that she “would slap Danny Zuko” in a second, before enthusiastically clarifying: “Not Joe though!”

Promoting many “more production numbers” as Karalias promises, and with your classmates taking on the roles of these beloved characters and taking them to new levels of slap-worthiness, Grease is unmissable.

Tickets are $10 at the door and is being performed Friday March 14 at 7:00, Saturday March 15 at 2:00 and 7:00, as well as Sunday March 16 at 4:00.

So be there or be square; the 50’s are only coming to Pentucket for this weekend.
