Fall sports have begun at Pentucket and the varsity girls’ soccer team is gearing up for the big season ahead.
The girls’ varsity soccer team has had miraculous success over the past three years. Starting in the 2020-2021 season, the girls had five wins and zero losses, taking first place in the Cape Ann League (CAL) for the second year in a row. In the 2021-2022 season, the girls had seven wins, two ties, and one loss, taking 2nd place in the CAL yet again. Finally, in the 2022-2023 season, the girls had six wins, zero ties, and two losses, taking 1st in the Cape Ann League. So far, in the 2023-2024 season, the girls have eight wins, two ties, and four losses, taking 4th overall.
When Coach, Andrew Casey, was asked his thoughts on the losses the team experienced since last season, he said, “We lost seven starters and twelve players total, so that is a lot.” Coach Casey said, “We also scored fifty-five goals last season, and thirty of those were scored by three players who graduated last spring.” The team has had some significant losses, but they are certainly not going down without a fight.
Player, Gwen Goodwin, expressed her thoughts on the team’s losses as well; “We had some losses from last year and the graduated seniors. They were a huge loss for the team and are certainly very missed.” Goodwin said, “Our team has come together but there is still a piece missing without the seniors.” Gwen reflects on how the rest of the team feels without the seniors.
Player, Wynter Smith, had some opinions on the success of the girl’s soccer team this year; “I do indeed think we have a successful season ahead.” Smith added, “We have only played tough teams so far and have seemed to do well.”
Goodwin shared her thoughts on the camaraderie of the team; “I think the team is very close and we work very well together at practice and games and we are all friends outside of soccer as well.”
Smith voiced her opinions on the team dynamics as well; “I would describe the team dynamics as motivated and strong. ”
The Pentucket girls’ varsity soccer team is ready for the season ahead and is confident in their ability to succeed against these tough teams in the CAL.
