You walk into English class and your teacher hands you a new book to analyze. The book ends up being the most boring waste of time book that makes you want to poke your eyes out.
What book was it?
Student Opinion
When asked, Jonah Brien said: “The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. It has to be one of the worst books I’ve ever read. Forgettable and annoying characters. Also really boring.”
Description: The secret life of bees.
Zach Bishopp, who hated the novel Macbeth, states: “It’s a play, and I did not like the format.”
Description: “Three witches tell the Scottish general Macbeth that he will be king of Scotland. Encouraged by his wife, Macbeth kills the king, becomes the new king, and kills more people out of paranoia. Civil war erupts to overthrow Macbeth, resulting in more death” (Shakespeare Birthplace Trust) Macbeth.
An anonymous student did not enjoy reading The Other Wes Moore because: “I’m not saying that it wasn’t a well-written book. I think eventually I would’ve read it. I think it was a cool idea like having their two lives compared but in the end I just didn’t really get anything out of it. Most books I’ve read have had a deep message to them and a lot of symbols for life. But in The Other Wes Moore, I got nothing like that. To me, it was just a guy comparing his life to someone with the same name, and it’s just funny that their lives are like opposites. I also didn’t like it because at the very end, he wrote about all of the things he did and it just kind of felt like he was bragging about everything he got to do with his life which I didn’t like at all.” (Description: The Other Wes Moore)
A couple of people who were asked chose Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Narjis Musa explains her opinion by saying, “The quality of the writing was great. I would have enjoyed the book if the moral of the story had been different. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I personally think Amir didn’t actually change for the better. He acted out of guilt, and yes maybe he began to care, but guilt was always the driving factor in all his decisions. I thought it was a really interesting book about a man who was selfish and flawed, but I still can’t view it as a book about growth. I think there was probably a different book that could have been chosen for the topic of second chances.”
Another person said they did not like Kite Runner because, “It had strong mentions of rape, suicide, and gross descriptions of killing someone.” (Description: Kite Runner.)
Sawyer Pelletier, a senior said, “Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer because the main character was stupid, and the whole time reading it I felt like the author wanted me to feel bad for Chris McCandless but it is hard to feel bad for him because he is so dumb.” (Description: Into the Wild)
Owen Aalto said: “Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes because it was like a whole year to read half of the whole book and it was so boring and just bad.” ( description links:Johnny Tremain)
Conclusion
While most people have different opinions on which book is the worst book they have had to read for school, I think we can all agree that English class books get boring quickly. Now a question for the reader to think about: what is the best book you have ever read for English class? What was the worst?
