Have you ever wondered how Pentucket’s athletics are doing so far in their season? Well, I went and interviewed one or two people on each fall sport team to ask them about their season and to get a deeper understanding on how their season is going. Each player or captain was asked very similar questions to really get a good idea in comparison to all of Pentuckets Athletics.
Golf Team
Firstly interviewed, Aaron Wirwicz on the Golf Team. I asked him about the golf team’s record and their most recent match win: “We are 1-6, we beat Amesbury and had a pretty good match, we beat them by 14 points. Me and Charles did not play the best, but we still beat the people we were playing against. And that’s all that matters.” He was asked who really stood out and played well during the match. “I think Noah Meyers had a really good match, he always plays well and is in the number one spot on our team.” Aaron is hopeful and wants to win but says the team has some rough matches ahead.
Field Hockey
Next I talked to Kat Flaherty, a captain of the Field Hockey Team. Once again, they were asked what is the team’s record, and what was the most recent victory: “We are 3-2-1. Our most recent win was against Swampscott on Monday, 6-0.” It was good to see that the team had a strong start with a winning record and a dominant win over Swampscott. She was then asked, beside the score of the game, how did it go? Besides the score in the Swampscott, how did that game go? “It went pretty good, we came out strong in playing our own game.” Along with that question, I also asked who had a good game: “The defense as a whole played well with zero goals against players like Abbie Felzani, Sam Beegan, and Haylie Gagnon. Cat Colvin also had a great game on the offensive side, scoring two of the six goals.” I then asked how the future looked for the rest of the season: “I think it looks great. If we continue to play how we have been, we should win most of our upcoming games.” Overall, after talking to Kat, I believe that the team can and will make the playoffs and continue to win games.
Football Team
I first asked Steven Harper, a captain of the football team, what the team’s record is and how their most recent game went: “We are 0-1, we played North Metro and lost by one point with a score of 31-30 in the last three seconds of the game.” As shocking as that is, I had to ask him what happened in those last three seconds of the game. He said, “They were on our two yard line and ran it up the middle to score and get ahead.” From the looks of it, it was a really close and good game. So I asked him who had good plays and stood out: “Jackson Miller. He is the running back. He had 11 rushes for 150 yards and scored a touchdown. Aaron Ketchske had seven catches for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Carrion had four catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns. I threw 12 out of 24 for 268 yards and four touchdown passes.” I then asked him how the future looked out for the football team, he said, “I think we’re a really young team, but we have a lot of talent and are right there with every other team in the CAL.” I’m very excited to see this team play and hopefully get some wins under their belt.
Girls’ Cross Country
I asked Kate Conover, a captain of the team, what the team’s record is and how their most recent race went, “We’re 0-1 right now, our most recent race didn’t go as well as we wanted it to. We raced Newburyport which is known to have a great team.” I then asked if anyone stood out or had a personal record in this meet. She said, “Everyone ran how they normally would have, the effort was there from everyone but sometimes we can get outmatched.” Finally, I asked her how the future looks for the rest of the season, “I think once a few people that are injured come back and get miles on their legs, we will improve. Also, when the underclassmen on the team are able to get into a rhythm and feel for the sport, our team can take off.” Kate sounds optimistic for the rest of the season and I am excited to see how the rest of the season goes.
Boys’ Soccer
I felt I could write about this myself, as I am a captain of the team. The team’s current record is 2-4-1. We beat Georgetown and Rockport. We tied Triton but lost to Essex Tech, Newburyport, North Reading, and Manchester Essex. Although it looks like the season hasn’t started off too great, I have a lot of hope going forward. I think we played some really good teams to start the season, but now we are in the swing of the season and hope to see more wins added to our record. In our past wins, a lot of people had good games. Matt Silva racked up goals and assists while I scored a goal in Rockport to win the game, Matt Silva scored first in a 2-1 win. The future looks good; I am predicting a 8-9 win season and hopefully an entry into the playoffs.
Boys’ Cross Country
I talked to Sean Mitchell, a captain of the team. I first asked about the team’s record and how the most recent race went “We are 0-2, the last race was very close against Triton. we only lost by two points.” With a close loss like that, it was good to hear this news and it made me have hope for the team for their upcoming races. I then asked about anyone who stood out and had a good race: “Zack Hanula and Max Cappola both ran very well and got their personal records in the past meet.” This is a good thing to hear for any team, knowing that some of the runners are only getting better as the season progresses. I then asked him about the future of the season: “We are very optimistic about the rest of the season. We have been working hard and practicing and hope to beat Essex Tech.”
Volleyball Team
I talked to both Jocelyn Bickford and Maisie King, two captains of the team. I asked them what their record is and how their most recent game went: “We are 6-1 and we’re tied for first in the CAL. Our most recent game was last night against Lynnfield and we swept them 3-0” said Bickford. Then, I went on to ask them who stood out or had a great game, “Mia Bartholomew and Amelia Crowe both played very well, They played really smart and had some great blocks,” said King. With such a hot start to the season, I asked how the rest of the season looks for the team: “Very good, we are on track to win the CAL for the first time in program history,” said Bickford.
Girls Soccer Team
I first asked Lyla Pherson, a captain, what the team’s record was and how she saw their next game going,to which she answered, “0-6-1, I am hoping that we will pull through with our first win of the season against Amesbury.” I then asked Lyla who stood out this season, “Sofia Bellacqua has played really well this season. She had her first varsity goal against Rockport.” Lastly, I asked how the future looks for the rest of the season: “The games to come will be challenging, however the Pentucket Girls Soccer Team stays very optimistic.”
By writing this article, I hoped to help students get a full understanding on how each sports team season is going, hoping you might support or start following our teams.

Its interesting reading this now knowing how most if not all of the seasons have gone and shows that people were maybe a bit too hopeful, but at least had good sportsmanship in that.
