Can white lies be justified? While sometimes telling lies to protect someone’s feelings can be moral, at what point is it deemed immoral? There are many factors to take into account such as use, importance, and scenario. When people use white lies, it is normally to protect someone’s feelings.
When asked if he saw white lies as something to use, sophomore Aiden Johnson said: “I would probably lie when I am in a tricky situation, like if a kid asked me about Santa or the tooth fairy. That would be a situation when I would lie.” When asked if white lies could lead to a habit of lying he said, “Absolutely, telling small lies is like a gateway into telling bigger lies.”
Next, sophomore Louie Martieniello was asked if he saw telling white lies as a good thing. He said, “I mean yeah, but it would depend on the situation.” When asked about a situation where he would use white lies, he answered, “Like if someone asked me a question and the answer was rude I would lie.” Finally, he was asked if he thought white lies could lead to lying as a habit; he said: “It would depend on how much someone lies, but I guess it could lead to a lying habit.”
Why is telling white lies important to think about? While lying is bad, sometimes telling lies to protect someone’s feelings is important. People deem white lies as justifiable but can lies really be justified? In some people’s eyes, sure white lies are no big deal and are good, but in other people’s eyes it could be seen as a problem. They could be seen this way because lying is a bad habit to get into, even if it is for a good reason. White lies could also be seen as a way to protect yourself from a truth, while protecting the other person is just a collateral byproduct. After looking into this topic I believe that telling lies to protect someone is okay if used in moderation.

I think the person interviewed had a really good answer because I would have said something similar. Especially with the Santa idea since that isn’t something anyone wants to spoil for little kids.
