Fall: the season when schools start, people get the flu, and bugs fly into the house.
Yet for many, it’s an exciting time of the year, with new activities and new scenery. Now that it’s October and the peak of the season, it’s interesting to see what everyone at Pentucket is up to.
Students
Junior Morgan Dewey shared her opinion on some of the activities she does: “I like hiking [during] the fall, especially with the nice foliage.”
When it comes to movies she watches during fall, Dewey said, “I hate scary movies. I’ll usually watch The Nightmare Before Christmas or A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. I also watch [the TV show] Gilmore Girls.”
She also mentioned that she does some baking: “I’ve made pumpkin pie.”
Similarly, Senior Teagan Hines said that she enjoys “making apple pie and pumpkin pie.” Baking seems to be a popular activity this season.
Hines is very passionate about fall. When asked what her favorite part about it is, she mentioned, “I like that while the sky is gray and gloomy, the trees are colorful.”
On the subject of Halloween, Hines said, “I do celebrate Halloween, [but for me] it’s just a fun holiday. It’s not something I take seriously.” Even so, she said that she hangs out with her parents or friends and watches Hocus Pocus.
It seems that many students consider watching fall or Halloween movies essential.
Senior Annie Point gave her opinion on what movies she watches: “I love Scream, that’s a good movie.”
Yet similar to Dewey, Senior Sophie Marcus mentioned that she doesn’t like scary movies. Instead, she said, “I like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”
Clearly, there are a lot of options if you find yourself in need of a new movie to watch during this time of year!
Teachers
In addition to students who enjoy the fall, teachers at Pentucket do as well. Chemistry teacher Ms. Lentz loves fall as well as Halloween. When asked about what she does to celebrate, she said, “I usually go to Topsfield Fair. [My family and I] usually try to go away somewhere and do some [fall] family activities.”
She also mentioned that she loves baking and cooking fall dishes, her reason being that “the weather is getting colder so I crave foods like soups and stews.”
When it comes to Halloween, Ms. Lentz is a fan. She explained, “On Halloween, a friend of ours hosts a costume party.” She said that she usually plans her costumes months in advance.
Yet Ms. Lentz’ same spirit of Halloween is present at school as well. “The science department is very serious about the costume competition,” said Ms. Lentz. Last year, the science department dressed up as Barbie dolls and won first place.
While some teachers at Pentucket consider fall a very exciting time, others take it with a grain of salt. Physics teacher Mr. Jacques said that while he does not do much to celebrate the season, he goes to Topsfield Fair on occasion, though he said he hasn’t been there in a while. He also mentioned that he doesn’t do much on Halloween to celebrate.
Additionally, he was asked if he watches any fall or Halloween-related movies, to which he responded, “I usually watch The Shining this time of year.”
Conclusion
Fall is a busy time of year for all, regardless of how people choose to celebrate it. There are those who take the opportunity to do fall-related activities and make the most out of the season, while others take it lightly. How do you celebrate fall?
