For student-athletes, the weight room is more than just a space filled with heavy equipment, it’s a place where they can continue their athletic development and personal growth. In high school sports, coaches emphasize the importance of incorporating weight training into athletes’ workout routines. Fortunately at Pentucket Regional High School, athletes have the chance to claim these benefits. Pentucket is split into two sections: the high school wing on the right and the middle school wing on the left.
The weight room can be found on the first floor of the middle school side, where students learn about the proper way to lift and how it can improve their physique making them excel in their sport. Students are at an advantage due to this seemingly small thing in a school, but it is very necessary.
The teacher that is in charge of the weight room during the afternoon is Mr. Mahoney until the weight room closes which is around four or five PM. Mr. Mahoney teaches classes on weightlifting to help students understand the importance of it as well as why it’s significant to improve one’s physical condition, even if they don’t play sports.
Whenever there is a problem that one might have in the weight room, Mr. Mahoney is right around the corner willing to help any student in need.
Usually, when visiting the weight room Mr. Mahoney will have a workout already made for students who want to follow it and don’t really know what they are doing. Especially when teams come into the weight room, there are workouts for them that he has. Students are able to use these workouts as well and he provides them the workout if he still has it.
The reason why weight training is an important part of a school’s community is because it helps students who don’t perform in sports to improve their physique, allowing them to become stronger, healthier, or even faster.
Pentucket students often visit the weight room to train for their sport. The amazing thing about weight training is that it improves an athlete’s physical capabilities by targeting specific muscle groups. Athletes can enhance strength, power, and endurance, all of which are needed to excel in sports. For example, exercises like squats and deadlifts build lower-body strength essential for running and jumping, while bench pressing improves upper-body strength needed in sports like basketball and football.
Another reason that a student or athlete may be in the weight room is if they are injured and trying to recover this could be prevented by lifting. Normally, the most overlooked benefit of weight training is its role in injury prevention, which helps athletes be able to continue their sports or sports year-round.
