Chromebooks and Their Importance
Every student knows how important Chromebooks are. It’s where schoolwork is completed and a way of communicating with teachers and peers. If Pentucket didn’t supply them, we would have a lot more trouble completing schoolwork.
Most teachers and students use Chromebooks daily for work. Chromebooks are essential to their education and teaching. The application Google Classroom, is an online school application that allows students to do classwork digitally. It is on all of the Chromebooks, and it makes up about half of the school work teachers assign and students complete.
In our modern era, Chromebooks are used much more frequently. Many students can attest that doing work on a Chromebook is much easier than on paper. All in all, Chromebooks play a significant role in our daily education.
The Lack of Chargers
Obviously, students need chargers in order for their Chromebooks to function properly. The issue is, they don’t always have access to chargers. Many students forget them at home, and in different scenarios, they may not even own a charger at all. Most of the time, students will ask others for a charger. This doesn’t teach kids independence but makes them rely on others instead.
Either way, when a student doesn’t have a charger, the outcome is never good. Deadlines for work are always important, so what happens when someone doesn’t have a charger and their work is due today? The lack of chargers in school has caused many students to struggle as they risk missing deadlines which causes their grades to drop. It’s without a doubt that this is not just a grade issue, but an issue among everyone at Pentucket.
What the People Think
It is beyond a shadow of a doubt that not having a Chromebook charger has become a big problem at Pentucket, but what do the people at Pentucket think? Three individuals were prompted with the same questions.Their responses are as follows:
How often are you asked for a Chromebook charger?
“Every day. I am asked for a charger every day.” –Mrs. Costello, Librarian
“At least once a day.”– Ms Hamilton, business teacher
“I am asked all the time, but I don’t have a Chromebook charger, I have a Macbook. – Vivian Asimelli, Senior
“Do you find being asked for a Chromebook charger annoying?”
“A little bit yes, but I also understand that they forget to plug it in at night.” – Mrs Costello, Librarian
“Not really, but if I [were able to] help them I would [do so].” – Vivian Asimelli, Senior
“No I don’t, because I understand everybody forgets something once in a while.” – Ms. Hamilton, Business teacher
“How do you feel not having a Chromebook charger affects students?”
“They can’t do their work. It will die eventually if it is not charged, so it greatly affects them.” – Mrs. Costello, Librarian
“It negatively affects them. It makes it more difficult to complete daily tasks.” – Vivian Asimelli, Senior
“It negatively affects [students] stress levels, yet [at the same time] also teaches [them about] responsibility.”- Ms. Hamilton, Business teacher
The following responses all varied in some way, yet all could agree that not having a Chromebook charger negatively affects students.
Effects of Not Having a Charger
First and most importantly, not having a charger prevents students from doing their work, but also causes them to leave the classroom, which keeps students away from their work. This can lead to students missing important lessons or receiving a late or poor grade.
Moving on, another effect of not having a charger is thievery. Many students will steal others’ chargers to charge their own Chromebooks. This leads to other students not having one which only makes the problem at hand worse.
Lastly, another huge effect of not having a charger is stress. When a student doesn’t have a charger, they may be put under stress. Since they can’t do their work, possible breakdowns may happen and procrastination may be present.
Solutions
The real question, however, is how can we put a stop to this problem as a school? Let’s look over some possible methods in possibly putting a stop to this outbreak.
A charger drive could be a good solution for more chargers. Not only would others be supplied with chargers, but it also could be a way of bringing our community together.
Some other methods include a fundraising event, which may be fun for other students and faculty as well as our community to raise money for more chargers.
More simply, just being a good person and lending a helping hand when another is asking for a charger can make a big impact on someone. This problem can be fixed, but we as a community must work together in doing so.
