Pentucket Baseball’s season so far has been solid. At the time of writing, the team currently owns a record of 9-8, only needing one more win out of their 3 remaining games to clinch a spot in the state tournament.
However, many players believe that the team’s record is not an accurate reflection on how the team has been playing this year.
“The CAL is very competitive this year.” Says junior Captain Julien Powers. “We’ve lost a number of close games early on in the season due to not being able to execute deep into games.”
This seems to be the recurring theme for the Panthers’ season so far. However, things are looking bright for the team. After merceying Ipswich this past Wednesday by a score of 12 to 2, the team seems to have some momentum leading into the last stretch of the regular season.
“The boys are rolling,” says pitcher Patrick Stewart. “The bats are hot, the defense has been awesome, and we’ve been playing as a team.”
When asked about the matter, junior Captain Noah Meyer says, “We have 3 games left in the season and we’re shooting to win all three. We’re playing good baseball right now and there’s no doubt in my mind that we will make it to the playoffs.”
The team is looking good, and the stats prove it. This past Thursday, the Newburyport Daily News posted its updated area baseball leaders. Out of 21 players, 7 Pentucket players were featured as leaders in batting average. The Panthers had the most names on that list out of any team featured.
Perhaps the more impressive stat is that the top four RBI [Runs batted in] leaders were all Pentucket players. And once again, Pentucket had the most names on that list by far. The second number of players on the same team, which was featured on that list was 2.
This just goes to show that the Panthers are a completely different team than their record shows, especially with the momentum that they have. And when the playoffs roll around, they are more than capable of winning any game on their schedule.
