Your summer fashion SOS was heard and answered.
Whether you’re looking forward to a breezy summer on the East Coast or a sun-bathing Euro summer, Mamma Mia! contains all the early 00s trends and styles that continue to influence generation after generation.
The worldwide infamous musical and movie was originally written by British playwright Catherine Johnson and two ABBA band members Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus that became the sensation it is today when it caught the attention of theater producer Judy Craymer.
Craymer became intrigued at the idea after she watched the 1983 musical Chess, based on the book by Tim Rice about a chess tournament that took place during the Cold War timeline and the personal and intimate relationships that ensued, much like Mamma Mia! itself.
Both Andersson and Ulvaus wrote the music for Chess, and after Craymer heard the band’s song “The Winner Takes It All,” the rest, as they say, was history.
The musical first debuted in London, England in the spring of 1999 and then the United States in the fall of 2000. Mamma Mia! made its Broadway debut in October of 2001, where it continues to play to this day.
In fact, the musical is still among the most popular today, and has performed on stage in more than 40 countries across the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and has grossed in over $2 billion dollars internationally.
The film adaptation, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, was released in July 2008 and starred Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Juloe Walters, Christine Brasinksi, among others.
Mamma Mia! The Movie used Johnson’s original screenplay and musical book, and Craymer, Andersson, and Ulvaeus served as executive producers with the latter two composing the music for the film as well.
And when Mamma Mia! The Movie hit the theaters, it gave us characters, scenes, and outfits that became its own culture.
The movie went on to win Meryl Streep the 2009 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Song From a Soundtrack, as well as a Rembrandt Award for Streep as Best International Actress and Best International Film for the movie itself.
The film was even nominated for a Grammy, two Golden Globes, and a BAFTA Award.
It’s quite clear the influence of Mamma Mia! and it’s influence in both the theatrical, musical, and film world are far from over, for, just when you thought the fun of ABBA’s songs had danced its final dance, the cast and crew went on to film and producer a sequel in 2018 titled, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again with all of the original cast plus some new fan-favorites.
The only person missing from the sequel was Streep, whose absence from the film was significant, because the actress has set her boundaries in Hollywood, one of them being that she does not reprise her roles again in spin-offs or sequels.
Thus, the sequel encapsulated all of the joy it’s predecessor gave us, proving the legacy of Mamma Mia! is one that cannot be contained to a mere 15 minutes of fame.
Today, Mamma Mia! continues to play in theaters and on Broadway, as well as referenced throughout pop culture and in media.
One of the film’s aspects which made it so popular was its European boho-chic fashion that people continue to recreate today.
