Newburyport, MA, just a few miles east of the historic streets of downtown Newburyport, lies Plum Island, a coastal sanctuary where time seems to slow with the tide. On a recent visit, I experienced firsthand what makes this barrier island one of Massachusetts’ understated gems.

The drive into Plum Island feels like crossing into a different rhythm of life. Salt marshes give way to quiet neighborhoods and winding coastal roads. The transition from town to coast is almost cinematic.

Finding parking was manageable but not seamless. While a few lots were available near the beach entrance, they filled up quickly. Expect to pay around $15 during peak season, and be ready for a short walk if you’re not early.

Beach Quality

Stepping onto the sand, Plum Island Beach immediately sets itself apart from more commercialized shores.

The sand is soft and golden, a mixture of fine grains and coarser sections, perfect for walking barefoot. The beach stretches wide and long, offering ample space even during busier hours.

The Atlantic waters were crisp but refreshing, with gentle waves ideal for a cooling dip. There was a bit of seaweed in some areas, but nothing that detracted from the overall experience.

Amenities and Access

Plum Island strikes a delicate balance between natural beauty and public accessibility.

Amenities are basic. Restrooms and a few rinse-off showers are available near the main entrance, but food options are limited. Be sure to pack snacks or stop at nearby cafes before you arrive.

There are boardwalks and paths, but parts of the beach may be difficult to navigate for those with less mobility.

Atmosphere 

Peaceful and family-friendly. The lack of loud music, vendors, and chaos makes this a haven for relaxation. The crowd skews more toward families, couples, and nature enthusiasts than partygoers.

Whether you’re sunbathing, reading, collecting shells, or birdwatching, there’s something for everyone. Swimming is safe but not patrolled by lifeguards everywhere, so caution is advised.

This area is also a hotspot for migratory birds and even the occasional seal sighting. The dunes and protected wetlands offer a dynamic ecosystem and countless photo opportunities.

Overall Ranking 

Plum Island Beach isn’t trying to be trendy, it’s trying to be timeless. If you’re seeking nature and space to breathe, this is the place for you. Though amenities could be stronger, its charm lies in its minimalism. This is New England in its purest form. I rate my experience at Plum Island a 9/10.
