Is Cereal Soup???
January is national soup month!
The definition of soup is “a liquid dish, typically made by boiling meat, fish, or vegetables, etc., in stock or water.” Some different types of soup would include tomato soup, chicken noodle soup, pea soup, French onion soup, various chowders, various bisques, cream of mushroom, gumbo, gazpacho, hot and sour soup, lentil soup, minestrone, tom yum, and every college students favorite…. ramen!
So basically there’s a soup out there for everyone!
But wait, couldn’t cereal be considered soup too?
Think about it, soup can be hot or cold (example: chicken noodle and gazpacho). It can be made with different ingredients like meats, grains and vegetables and can be paired with different liquids (example: hot and sour and cream of mushroom) so why, in theory, couldn’t you wake up one morning and serve yourself a cold bowl of cream/milk based soup with floating grains and sugar? Pentucket senior Dylan Wright certainly thinks so! He said, “I guess it’s a cold soup. I’m going to say cereal is a soup”
Not all shared his opinion so we hit the halls to find out if students would consider cereal a form of soup and what we found was the question is just about as controversial as anything happening in the actual news today.
Pentucket senior, Lauren Pryzpek said cereal can’t be a soup because “cereal is milk and cereal” and Junior, Ryan Depaolo even went as far as saying “whoever thinks cereal is a soup is an idiot”
The truth is there is no real answer to this question because the definition of soup is too vague and can be interpreted however anyone wants.
With that in mind I would even go as far as saying that cereal could even be an overdressed milky salad… and at that point its basically just pizza.
