Has Halloween Become Too Sexy?
Put the word sexy in front of anything, and you have a costume. This is the case for all Halloween costumes for women these past few years. These costumes range from sexy corn, sexy Barney, and the list just goes on. The pressures of this trend can be both controversial and troubling.
“Maybe I just want to be corn,” says senior Alyssa Mostyn. “It doesn’t always have to be sexy.” She and some others believe there should be more options available for teens and young adults than just the revealing selection.
It seems that this concept makes many feel disappointed in our culture, and that the first thing that pops up when someone searches in Google for “girl costumes” or just costumes for women, only risqué costume options will come up.
“Society shouldn’t frame it so that girls have to dress a certain way on Halloween. But if you want to dress like that no one’s stopping you,” says another senior Julia Recine. “I have nothing against those who wear those types of costumes, it doesn’t really affect me.”
What Recine had to say brought in another angle of the situation when she points out the fact that people are allowed to do whatever they want to for Halloween granted there is a dress code. It can be almost certain that when the time of year rolls around for people to start choosing their costumes, jokes will be told about basic girl costumes, such as the typical cat.
Not everyone seems to think it is that big of a problem. When questioned if the basic girl wore something revealing for Halloween, freshman Stephanie Patriakeas states that “…Not that many people actually take that route. I see more people wearing cute costumes that are homemade than something sexy so people should stop stereotyping girl’s costumes.”
Patriakeas also says “Girls can wear whatever they want to, it doesn’t affect me in any way.”
But will this issue ever change? Will there ever be more options for women on Halloween other than something sexy? The general response seemed to be no, that it just doesn’t affect that many people’s idea of Halloween like expected.

I liked the touch of humor, but i do not believe this to be an issue.

The article was very interesting, and it is understandable the different points of view people have on halloween its pretty funny.

I personally think the way one chooses to dress is their decision. People will of course have their opinions but in the end, it’s up to the person wearing the clothes. On another note, girls (and guys) should take self respect into consideration. The way one chooses to dress, is also the way one chooses to make first impressions and the way one chooses to come off. If someone wants to dress “sexy”, then that’s their decision. But they have to be prepared for eyes on them and comments. I personally think dressing overly “sexy” for the whole school to see, is very un respectable.

This is something that has always bothered me too. I really hope that one day these stereotyoes will change and that a girl’s body will no longer be inherently sexual.

I agree it is troubling that searching ‘girl costume’ and immediately sexy costumes come up since society is seeming to over sexualize teenage girls and their bodies. A bigger problem I have is last year the boys cross country team all wore shorts (much shorter than dress code allows) and crop tops (which showed more than enough mid-drift) yet not a single one was dress coded- It definitely distracted my learning that day.

I haven’t noticed girls taking Halloween costumes too far, but I personally have always like dressing up as a cat!

Great article! I agree that Halloween is a serious topic for schools. Sometimes I am surprised that stricter teachers do not make girls cover up on Halloween. But it is a holiday and people should be able to wear what they want.

I do believe there is a scarcity in women’s costumes that aren’t “sexy” but i have found that most do something homemade anyway. I don’t think the pressure to look “sexy” is usually a problem but it has obviously effected Rosnik’s costume choice.

Great article Angela! I personally do not enjoy Halloween but even I can see that this could be a serious issue.

Very interesting. Both girls and boys may feel pressured to wear a “sexy” costume on Halloween, some maybe a little too sexy.

This was a very interesting article and I enjoyed reading it.

I agree with the article about how costumes are getting more risky year by year, but I also feel like Halloween is a time to dress up as whatever you want so it’s not a huge deal.

I thought that this was enjoyable to read! It was very well-written, and a very interesting topic to cover.

I think this is a really well-written piece on a topic that is contraversail and effects many girls now-a-days. I like all the different people that were incoperated into this, too. It gave some different perspectives which is important in an article.

I liked reading this article. I wonder why people have to make everything sexy. Somethings are better if they are left regular.
