Avengers: Endgame Theories
February 2, 2019
(Infinity War spoilers included!)
The wait is finally over.
After months of potential spoilers, theories, and many angry tweets towards the Russo brothers, the trailer for the fourth Avengers film has been released. Titled Avengers: Endgame, the film’s trailer had racked up over 70 million views on YouTube within one week. With that many views in such a short period of time, it’s clear that the feeling of dread and untamable excitement is shared among fans.
The film, set to release on April 26, 2019, follows the various characters of Infinity War and its devastating aftermath. And with half of the universe gone and many of the heroes scattered, it’s up to those characters who remain in Endgame to reverse Thanos’ effects.
The movie’s synopsis can be read from the following:
“Adrift in space with no food or water, Tony Stark sends a message to Pepper Potts as his oxygen supply starts to dwindle. Meanwhile, the remaining Avengers — Thor, Black Widow, Captain America, and Bruce Banner — must figure out a way to bring back their vanquished allies for an epic showdown with Thanos — the evil demigod who decimated the planet and the universe.”
A few distinct elements can be gathered from the trailer. Certain plot points, characters, details can help viewers understand the film and develop various theories. Viewing each one can give a better understanding of what will happen in Avengers: Endgame.
Overall Death Toll in Infinity War
At the end of Infinity War, we can see a glimpse of what happened to the universe after the Snap. Avengers: Endgame will hopefully dive deeper into what truly happened.
With no hope of recovery, many are left in a panic following the events of Infinity War. And with a number of heroes missing or confirmed to have not survived the Snap, the universe is most likely in shambles. The lack of communication also caused many to assume that others have disappeared, including Tony Stark, Scott Lang, and Shuri.
However, this theory can formulate that the number of deaths from the Snap did not cease. Immediately after the disappearance of half the universe, there would be a mass increase in the number of deaths. There would be a rise in machinery failing to operate properly, resulting in fatal accidents. Less first responders and staff in hospitals would also add to the number of victims
In a matter of days, the universe would be in utter chaos and shambles.
Time Travel
One theory that has been prominent on the Internet is that the remaining Avengers plan to bring back those they have lost. How they do this is commonly debated, yet some believe that Endgame will include “time-traveling.”
It’s possible that the remaining Avengers plan to go back in time and change the events of Infinity War. This could include one of two ways: the Avengers somehow acquire the Time Stone and use it to their advantage or they use scientific methods to find a way to travel back.
Finding the Time Stone would be difficult, however. Unless the Avengers discover the location of Thanos, they would be unable to retrieve the Stone and use its powers.
If the Avengers were to travel back in time, though, they may recruit one more hero to defeat Thanos: Captain Marvel.
Although the end credits scene for Infinity War showed Nick Fury sending a distress signal to her, there is a chance Carol Danvers didn’t survive. And this could explain why she was not present in the Endgame trailer.
If the Avengers travel back to the 1990s to recruit her for the events of Infinity War, it’s possible that Captain Marvel will have an end credits scene with the Avengers present.
Shuri’s Fate
An additional theory that might be revealed in Endgame is that Shuri is still alive. While an image of her fleetingly appears on the list of missing in the trailer, there is still a 50 percent chance that she remains in Wakanda.
With the loss of T’Challa, Wakanda’s former king, Shuri would assume the role of leader to the country. It would be her responsibility to lead her nation out of conflict and panic. However, given the current state of Earth, it might be in Wakanda’s best interests to force Shuri into hiding for her own safety.
The royal family of Wakanda most likely had seen the Snap as a threat against her well-being, seeing as it had taken her brother and many of her people in the process. Thus, Shuri’s disappearance might have been a result of protection from the world until she was ready for her duties as a queen and a scientist.
Ant-Man’s Escape
Fans also began to speculate how Scott Lang had escaped the Quantum Realm after becoming trapped in it during Ant-Man and the Wasp. In the Endgame trailer, he can be seen trying to contact Steve Rogers and the Avengers, not a care in the world.
So just how did he escape?
According to Screenrant, Janet Van Dyne provided Landan important piece of information before he entered the Quantum Realm: steer clear of time vortexes.
Time vortexes are common in science fiction, and they play homage to Einstein’s theory of relativity. In a movie like Avengers: Endgame, a person could travel through a time vortex and could enter another location or a different time.
And the time vortex is exactly how Lang might have escaped.
Whether it was intentional or not, escaping through a time vortex would have allowed him to enter a different location in the universe. If he entered the wrong location or plane of existence, he could simply use his suit to shrink down into the Quantum Realm and repeat the process until he arrived to his desired destination.
With a title like Endgame’s, this movie could be the end of all things we hold dear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the hype and intense plot shown in the trailer, it’s possible that anything could happen in this film. However, one thing is clear about Avengers: Endgame, all fans will be sitting on the edge of their seat from the first image of the Marvel logo to the very last end credits scene.
