Dead Whales in New Zealand
January 23, 2019
An alarming amount of beached pilot whales were found by a hiker on Mason Bay in New Zealand on November 24th. According to USA Today, the total number of whales comes in at 145 and scientists are still unsure of what exactly caused the mass beaching.
When found, about half of the beached whales were already dead. In a devastating outcome, the remaining whales had to be euthanized due to Mason Bay’s isolated location and the inability for the officials present to move all the remaining whales back into the ocean.
Returning whales back to the ocean can be a very dangerous task. The whales can become scared or stressed out when people try to return them to the ocean. This can lead to injury of those who are trying to return them. Because of this, getting the animals back into the ocean takes many people, a lot of time, and special equipment.
Whales can become beached for many reasons, as explained by The Washington Post. Illness, ocean currents, and oncoming predator all fall into this category. However, beachings caused by these things typically only include a single whale, not an entire pod of whales like what was found in New Zealand.
Though this event was unusual and shocking to many. It is not the first time a large group of whales has beached them themselves in New Zealand. According to The New York Times, in 1998, over 300 were beached in an area close to Mason Bay. In just February of 2018, another 250 whales were found beached in another location in New Zealand.

I really enjoyed this article as it is very well-written and to the point. The article includes all the important information needed for the reader to understand the severity of the event and uses several outside sources. I found it particularly interesting when Katelyn included the many past beachings of whales in previous years. Although this event does not take place near our location, it is important to be educated on issues all around the world and this article provides that. People need to be better familiarized with outside problems no matter where they take place. Overall, this article was very informative and was excellent to read.

This was a very well-written article. It included all relevant and direct points and did not include any ¨filler¨ or unnecessary information. It was also a really interesting topic that could be important for people to hear about. People definitely need to be more informed about the environment, even if it is not occurring in their country. Overall, great article Katelyn!
