My Top 5 Frank Ocean Songs

Frank Ocean is a talented American singer, songwriter, and producer. He first gained recognition as an alternative hip-hop collective Odd feature member. But it was his solo debut mixtape, “Nostalgia, Ultra” released in 2011, that put him in the spotlight. Frank Ocean is one of my favorite artists because of how much he advocates self-expression and being who you are.

    5. “Novacane”

I love the way the melody is very upbeat and I like the way the song can make me happy and sad at the same time.  The lyrics of this song explore themes of numbness, desire, and blurred lines between reality and fantasy. It is a thought-provoking track that delves into the effects of superficiality and the search for something deeper.  The song title “Novacane” is a metaphor for the numbing sensation that comes from seeking temporary pleasure and escaping from reality.

    4. “Thinkin’ Bout You” I love the way his voice sounds when he hits the high notes and how the lyrics are very relatable. Is a soulful ballad that showcases Frank’s emotional depth and vulnerability. This song is about longing and reminiscing. It reflects the memories and emotions associated with a past love; the lyrics capture the feeling of missing someone, and all the thoughts that come flooding back when you think about them.

    3. “Godspeed”

I love the way this song sounds and it is great to put on when you are in your feelings. Godspeed is a heartfelt, emotional song that expresses feelings of love, hope, and farewell. This song was written about a meaningful relationship from Frank Ocean’s childhood. Godspeed is Ocean´s way of getting closure with someone by going back and saying what he wishes he could have said to them when he was younger.

    2. “Pink+White”

This song reminds me of moving forward and not looking at the past. Pink+white is about Frank’s memories of his youth and someone close to him who passed away. He remembers the person by remembering all the lessons they taught him.  This is a dreamy collaboration with Beyonce, featuring beautiful harmonies and poetic lyrics. This song explores the themes of love, innocence, and the fleeting nature of time. The lyrics paint vivid imagery of a summer day, referencing pink skies, white sand, and the ocean.  The song captures a sense of nostalgia and reflects on bittersweet moments of life.

    1.“Lost”

This song is one of my favorite songs to play in summer with the windows down and turned up all the way. Lost is a feel-good anthem about embracing life’s uncertainties and finding oneself. It’s about the feeling of being lost and trying to find one’s way. The lyrics touch upon the challenges and uncertainties of navigating a relationship with the woman he loves and the challenges they have been through along the way. He demonstrates his commitment to the woman by referring to her as a “prototype” and also promising a family of her own.

Frank Ocean´s music is like a time machine, transporting you back to cherished memories or propelling you forward into a world of possibilities. So if you are in the mood for music that speaks to your soul and takes you on a journey, definitely give Frank Ocean a listen!

I wrote a similar article in my junior year of journalism. I enjoyed reading this and getting a view of the music you like from this artist. Personally, one of my favorites is “Pink+White”.
