Cave In’s Until Your Heart Stops

Cave In is an amazing band that has a very special place in my heart. This band formed in 1995 and is from Methuen Massachusetts (that’s two towns over) and this album is the band’s first of their 11 year career.

This band is relatively unknown due to the fact that they don’t make commercial radio friendly songs. But at one point they did tour with a band that everyone knows… the foo fighters!

Their first album Until Your Heart Stops was released in 1998 by Hydra Head Records and was recorded at God City studio in Salem Massachusetts.

The overall sound on this album is aggressive, groovy, melodic, experimental and all around badass. I would pair this album alongside the Atlanta based band Mastodon’s 2nd album Leviathan in terms of how intense it sounds.

Hearing this album reminds me of when I used to go to underground hardcore shows in the basements of record stores. It just has that vibe to it, and you can really hear how the Boston music scene has inspired Cave In’s early sound.

If you aren’t in the mood to listen to some of their aggressive music and want to hear some more poppy sounding I would suggest listening to “anchor,” “dark driving” or “Inspire.”

I would recommend anyone listening to this band because they’ve produced many songs that cross different genres of music. To sum it all up they have a little bit of everything that any true music fan can appreciate.
