Disney Sequels

Disney+Sequels

We’ve all been hit with a pang of nostalgia when thinking of the elegant princesses and energetic singing teenagers that filled the Disney movies of our childhoods. But what about the sequels to these classics?

“Almost all of the Disney sequels are terrible,” says Pentucket Sophomore Emily MacFarland. And many seem to agree.

Pentucket Sophomore Alanna Joachim says, “Disney Channel sequels are better than the Disney ones, which are the worst. But the new Disney Channel movies that they’re coming up with are really bad.” She then whispered in a serious yet ominous voice, “It’s only the classics.”

Most people also have not seen a lot of the sequels from Walt Disney. Sophomore Gabby Blake says that she “doesn’t bother watching them because [she] knows they will be bad.”

The sequels seem widely less popular than the originals. Once told the names of all of the Walt Disney sequels that are listed at the bottom of this article, all students interviewed said that they didn’t know that the majority of them even existed.

Many students agree that Disney sequels ruin the original, and that it would have been better if they were never created at all.

Blake added, ”I feel like it’s very hard to do a sequel well. They are really easy to mess up and usually turn out bad.”

While Walt Disney sequels have been going downhill for a long time, Disney Channel has taken a “turn in the wrong direction,” according to Joachim. Although some of the classics, like the High School Musical and Halloweentown series, are still considered relics by many teenagers today, almost all people can agree that they are getting worse.

Joachim said, “Teen Beach 2 was terrible. Although the original movie wasn’t very good because it was newer and let’s face it, the newer Disney Channel movies are trash, the sequel was even worse.”

Regarding Walt Disney movies, Pentucket Sophomore Hayley Palermo says, “They can be good and you expect them to be good, but often times they fall very flat.” It seems a common theme throughout teens that Disney movies often do not live up to people’s expectations.

Palermo also says that she has high hopes for Finding Dory. Many students agree that while Disney is going downhill, hopefully they can come together with Pixar and create a sequel that is finally good.

A amount of change from movie to movie is another reason why many people disapprove of the sequels.

For example, in the Halloweentown series the actress portraying the main character, Marnie, was changed for the last of the four Halloweentown movies on Disney Channel.

The High School Musical series is also getting a fourth movie, but with a completely new cast.

Many teenagers today cherish the High School Musical series and consider it a great part of their childhoods. Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and more worked to create a film that marked a generation. Now, teens fear that the franchise will be disgraced by the new movie.

So will the new movie ruin the High School Musical series? Based on Disney Channel’s past and student’s opinions, almost definitely.

Blake said that Disney must end the production of sequels and must “stop trying to beat a dead horse.”

She added, “Generally, if you’re watching a Disney sequel, all you’re in for is disappointment.”

Also, don’t forget that Disney Channel is having a marathon of all Disney Channel Original Movies during memorial day weekend, May 27-30!
