I think that there should be classes that are taught outside, especially when it is nice out. A Harvard study showed that classes that go outside improve students’ mental health, academic performance, and behavior. At Pentucket, we have many spaces that can be used to teach kids outside. Whether it is English and just reading a book, or it is gym class, and you are just getting exercise, being outside is a great way to engage kids with nature. With kids learning outside, they have a chance to be creative with their surroundings, even if it is just for 15 minutes. People who spend more time outside and less time indoors are a lot happier, smarter, and less anxious than people who spend a lot of time inside. If people study outside, they are lowering anxiety and stress levels, so they are having a healthier brain and body.Â
A plan that Pentucket could do is, on nice days, take the class out to the common areas and have students learn outside. Students’ mental health improves when there is fresh air and sunshine. But Pentucket made such beautiful areas, and they are not used to their full potential, so it should be offered to go outside even during lunch or a study hall. I also think that Pentucket should offer more field trips to visit the beach to learn about how we impact the environment, so that students are educated and know how to take care of the environment. Â
