Bringing a Gymnastics team to Pentucket will be an amazing opportunity for Pentucket
students to connect and grow inside and outside of the gym. How can gymnastics positively
affect students’ mindsets and lead the way to success?
Gymnastics actually increases students’ opportunities for success. A statistic from phillyvoice.com YASAP suggests that students involved in a gymnastics team were 7% more likely to graduate from high school and earn a
diploma while students who participate in college gymnastics have over a 90% higher graduation
rate than the average student. Through these statistics, it’s shown that gymnastics builds a
specialized mindset that comes with many academic advantages. Offering this opportunity to Pentucket students would create support for long term career benefits and success.
Why is it important?
Bringing a gymnastics team to Pentucket would provide students with a unique
opportunity to showcase their skills and represent their school. An interview with a freshman
student, Sofia Escobar, expresses her ideas towards building a school team. Sofia is a dedicated
gymnast who trains at Legends gymnastics outside of school. When asking her about her feelings
towards joining a school team she says “I would love to join, it sounds like a really fun idea. I
have been wanting to connect with other gymnasts outside of Legends and be noticed and
encouraged by my classmates.” For many club athletes, their sport only exists outside of their daily school life. Bringing gymnastics to Pentucket opens the door for other gymnasts and curious students to finally be able to connect through this shared interest. This connection can transform any student’s whole high school experience.
How might gymnastics help students build focus and discipline outside of the gym?
In an interview with my coach, Chris, from Interstate, I asked him for his thoughts on gymnastics
and its connection to the mind. Chris was a former gymnast and a coach, and from his experience, he believes that “Gymnastics is a way to learn how to focus. It teaches you the progression steps that you need to reach your goals. It helps you pay attention, not just to what you’re doing, but how your body moves and responds. You learn to connect your mind and body, which is crucial.” Through all of this, gymnastics becomes more than just a sport. It teaches you
patience, showing you that progress takes time and consistent effort. It also teaches you discipline since you have to keep showing up and putting in your best effort no matter what. Over time you’ll begin to understand how to focus and block out distractions to keep going.
In the end, the lessons you learn in gymnastics go far beyond the gym. Introducing a gymnastics team to Pentucket is more than another great addition to our lineup. It would be an environment to foster the long term success and well being of the student body and mind. Providing this opportunity for athletes who train outside of school and
for students who are eager to try a new sport can create an inclusive and connected community.
Each athlete can learn from each other, and pick up new skills and techniques to reach their
goals.
On top of that, the mental focus, physical discipline, and academic advantages that are
highlighted by statistics and coach Chris prove that the benefits of gymnastics go far beyond the gym. If Pentucket strives to empower students with the resilience and focus needed for life after
graduation, then bringing a gymnastics team is the next step.
