Pentucket should take a closer look at the Massachusetts cell phone ban before deciding whether to follow it, because while the rule might help students focus, it could also cause new problems for communication and student independence.
Following the proposed statewide school cell phone ban could potentially benefit Pentucket High School students by reducing distractions in the classroom, improving students’ focus, and increasing their academic performance in school. Studies have shown that banning cell phones in school is connected to more students performing better, especially for lower-achieving kids. (Scientific American )
On the other hand, the ban may create a few downsides. Students could quickly lose access to their phones in or when they need to contact parents. Some also may argue that Pentucket would be preventing students from learning self-control and responsible phone use. (Encyclopedia Britannica)
One major downside of not following the cell phone ban is the negative effects phones can have on the classroom environment. A teacher at Pentucket High School, Mr. McDonald, states that “Cell phones being used in school disrupts the learning environment greatly and has a far longer list of issues then benefits.” Another teacher at Pentucket High School, Mr. Provencal, states, “Allowing students to have cell phones out in class makes it difficult for students to be completely dialed into the lesson, making it less likely for them to succeed.” Both of their views reflect the concerns that many teachers have, regarding how cell phones can lead to constant distractions and off task behavior in the classroom.
Many students at Pentucket High School believe that the mandated cell phone ban is not the best solution for our school. Phones are not always used just for scrolling; they also help students stay organized. They do this by allowing students to check on assignments and contact family if something unexpected happens. This allows students to feel more independent and more in control of their day.
Pentucket High School sophomore Sophia Mahoney says, “Being able to have my phone on me makes me feel safer at school, and also allows me to feel like I have more freedom and independence.” This statement mostly reflects how most students feel overall about being allowed to use their cell phones throughout the day.
Overall, the Massachusetts-mandated phone ban has many pros and cons. What do you think Pentucket High School should do?
